COLUMBUS - State Rep. Christine Cockley (D-Columbus) this week continues to focus on addressing housing and homelessness in Ohio. Rep. Cockley remains focused on advancing solutions that address the housing crisis in Ohio and support people experiencing homelessness, housing advocates, and other stakeholders.
"Housing and homelessness are urgent issues affecting communities across Ohio, and they demand thoughtful, compassionate, and intentional bi-partisan action," said Rep. Cockley. "Whether we are working on legislation, hearing directly from stakeholders and people with lived experiences, or creating more space for collaboration, I remain committed to moving forward with solutions to create a more affordable Ohio."
This week, Rep. Cockley participated in and hosted several events focused on housing and homelessness. She discussed the importance of this work with by Brian Goldstone, author of "There Is No Place for Us" at the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio's (COHHIO) Annual Housing Ohio Conference.
She also presented at COHHIO's Youth Institute Initiative Day, serving as chair for a mock legislative committee, where she heard from youth with lived experiences.
Finally, Reps. Cockley and Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus) hosted their second community housing and homelessness roundtable, which brought together 25+ housing advocates, shelter providers, and various stakeholders.
"These conversations matter because the people closest to the work often have the greatest understanding of what is needed. Legislators must listen to both the people doing the work and those with lived experiences," concluded Rep. Cockley. "I am grateful to the people who continue to do the work, show up and share their stories, and help shape a better Ohio."
Her efforts follow the passage of House Bill (HB) 472 from the Ohio House of Representatives. This bill waives the fee for obtaining vital records and identification cards, including duplicates or reprints, for individuals experiencing homelessness. The bill now heads to the senate for consideration.
