Winners of Cameron’s Invitational High School Art Competition and Exhibition announced; 320 entries received

The Cameron University Invitational High School Art Competition and Exhibition received 320 entries from 175 high school art students, which resulted in a daunting task for the CU art faculty, who evaluated the works and selected the winning pieces. The exhibition will be on display in the Art Building on the east side of the Louise D. McMahon Fine Arts Complex, through May 2.

Carlos Flores, Altus High School, was awarded first place for "Owl," a mixed media creation painting crafted from acrylic paint and charcoal. Judges were impressed by the lively brushstroke, confidence with media and composition as well as the color.

Second place was awarded to EJ Kuehn, Lawton High School/Life Ready Center, for an acrylic painting, "Melancholy Night." Judges remarked on how well the content communicated a melancholy mood and also praised the color, composition and value contrast.

Elgin High School's Julia Bouwhuis was awarded third place for her watercolor titled "A Light in the Forest." The artist demonstrated technical control and handling of the watercolor media, capturing the light and color intensity.

Four entries were recognized with Honorable Mention designation. "Buffalo in the Plains," a Prisma color pencil and airbrush drawing by Lindy Chalepah, Anadarko High School, was praised for the modeling of value, creation of texture and incorporation of detail, as well as the confident handling of the Prisma color pencils.

"Key Lime Pie with Lime Base Drizzle," a clay sculpture by LaTasia Richey, Anadarko High School, was also selected for an Honorable Mention award. The judges were impressed by the artist's technical skill with clay, also remarking on the color through glazes and the detail with the lime topping.

Also receiving Honorable Mention was "Heron in the Pond," an acrylic painting by Isabella Urness of Lawton, who is home-schooled. The judges appreciated her flashy and confident brushstroke and textural details, as well as the cropped composition and color.

Another acrylic painting, "Hot Air Balloons," by Sara Hernandez, Altus High School, was recognized as well. The color intensity drew in the judges, who noted the artist's success at creating atmospheric effects, compositional interest and modeling with acrylic paint to create 3-D form and texture.

"The quality of artwork submitted for this competition was outstanding," says Edna McMillan, professor of art, who coordinated the event. "We have a visually stunning exhibition thanks to the response of these talented high school artists. We're grateful to the high school art teachers who encouraged their students to enter."
