Becker's cites the spine program as a national leader in advanced surgical techniques, groundbreaking research

January 23, 2025

Orange, Calif. - The UCI Health Comprehensive Spine Center has been recognized as one of the nation's leading spine programs by Becker's Hospital Review.

The spine center's key strength is the unique collaboration forged between UCI Health pioneers in orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery.

The accolade reads in part:

"Renowned for its innovative treatments, the spine center excels in minimally invasive, robotic and endoscopic procedures, and has received approximately $2 million in research grants since 2019 to support six active clinical studies in spinal therapies.

"Its biomechanics and cadaver labs drive advancements in spinal care, serving as hubs for research, education and training, while its spine fellowship program trains three fellows annually. The center continues to drive exceptional surgical success rates, low readmission rates and ongoing quality-improvement initiatives."

Collaboration benefits patients

The Comprehensive Spine Center successfully aligns multiple specialties to focus on each patient's journey.

Orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, pain management specialists, physical therapists and clinicians in related fields collaborate to diagnose, treat and manage spine and neurological conditions.

Patients benefit from these specialties working together in many ways, says Dr. Nitin N. Bhatia, chief of orthopaedic spine services:

  • Research collaboration. A multidisciplinary team creates research opportunities to explore novel treatments, such as biologics, advanced surgical techniques or digital health interventions. Diverse perspectives encourage out-of-the-box thinking, accelerating breakthroughs in spine and neurological care.
  • Shared technology and techniques. Teams leverage advanced tools such as robot-assisted surgery, artificial intelligence-driven imaging and wearable technology for real-time monitoring. This collective expertise ensures optimal use of technology and more rapid adoption of advancements in care.
  • Education and leadership training. Collaborative centers are able to attract top talent and educate the spine and neurosurgeons of the future. They foster cross-disciplinary learning that keeps them on the leading edge of advancements in related fields while maintaining the highest standard of patient care.
  • Continuous improvement. Integrated spine/neuro practices have better access to data for analyzing outcomes, refining protocols and reducing complications. They are also able to identify patterns and gaps in care to drive continuous improvement.

Pioneering spine surgery

The spine center's surgeons have long been pioneers in spinal surgery, performing the West Coast's first robot-assisted spine surgery, using the innovative SpineAssist® surgery system. They also are leading a clinical trial for a new device to avoid spinal fusion for lower back pain. In adition, the team has expertise in advanced microsurgery, image-guided surgery and most recently, endoscopic spine surgery.
