Ministers from IEA Member countries today unanimously invited Colombia to become the Agency's 33rd Member country, marking a significant expansion of the Agency's engagement in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The decision was taken at the IEA's 2026 Ministerial Meeting in Paris, which took place on 18 and 19 February. The Ministers' invitation followed the successful completion by Colombia of the IEA accession process, including technical and policy reviews. As an IEA Member, Colombia will participate fully in the Agency's work on energy security, market monitoring, data, analysis and policy dialogue.
"Colombia's accession to the International Energy Agency marks a historic milestone in the country's international energy engagement," Colombia's Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma Egea. "After more than four years of rigorous technical work, institutional strengthening and policy alignment, we are proud to join a community of Member countries committed to energy security and sustainability. As an IEA Member, Colombia looks forward to engaging even more actively in shaping global energy dialogue, strengthening international cooperation, and reinforcing our commitment to just and inclusive energy transitions that reduce inequalities, empower communities, and expand access to clean, reliable and affordable energy for all."
"I'm delighted that Colombia is becoming an IEA Member, a major milestone that will support the country's strong commitment to building a secure, sustainable and inclusive energy system," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. "As global energy markets evolve rapidly, closer international cooperation is more important than ever. Colombia's vibrant energy sector and its strategic role in the Americas will strengthen the IEA's collective capacity to address shared challenges and seize new opportunities."
Colombia has been working closely with the IEA in recent years, including through in-depth policy reviews and enhanced cooperation on long-term scenario analysis, energy efficiency and data transparency. Its accession underscores the Agency's continued evolution to reflect the changing geography of global energy demand and supply.
The invitation to Colombia highlights the shared commitment of IEA Members to strengthening multilateral energy cooperation. The IEA continues to broaden its membership and reinforce its role as the leading global authority on global energy security and technology.
