Water-Wise Landscaping Sessions this Month!

Just ahead of NorCal's peak rainy season, fall is a perfect time for planting. Learn how to transform unused lawn into a beautiful, water-efficient yard as City of Napa Water, Napa County Resource Conservation District (RCD), and UC Master Gardeners conclude the 2025 Water-Wise Landscaping Workshop Series with some timely October sessions. On two Thursday evenings (October 16th and 23rd) at the Senior Center, 1500 Jefferson Street, hear from local experts, ask questions, get helpful literature, and perhaps come away with a free plant or other useful door prize! Workshops are free. You may attend both sessions or just one, but please register in advance at cityofnapa.org/workshops. Workshop details:

Soils, Mulches, and More

Thursday, October 16, 6:30-8:30 pm

After the City's Water Resources Analyst summarizes the eight principles of water-wise landscaping, Miguel GarcĂa from Napa County RCD will examine local soil types and the critical role soil plays in establishing a water-wise landscape, then will demonstrate how to improve your soil with aeration, amendments, and mulch. The "sheet mulching" method of lawn removal will be highlighted. Local Master Gardeners will host three breakout stations for more in-depth learning.

Perfect Plant Picks

Thursday, October 23, 6:30-8:30 pm

Local landscape designers will demonstrate that drought-tolerant is anything but boring. Cathy Baskin will review a colorful and beautiful selection of tree, shrub, perennial, grass, vine, and groundcover species. Maureen Clark of Bright Garden Design will show off her recent yard transformation projects. Dozens of plants will be on hand for viewing and there will even be a free Milkweed giveaway. The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Napa Valley Chapter will be spotlighted. Local "Cash For Grass" rebate incentives will be explained.
