On 9 June 2026, an International Conference themed "The 25th Anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation: New Challenges and New Steps in Global Governance" was held in Shanghai, China. The conference was organized by the Shanghai Academy of International Studies (SIIS) together with the Shanghai Society for the Study of International Relations and the Shanghai Society for the Study of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The event was attended by representatives of think tanks from China (Beijing and Shanghai), the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Uzbekistan, foreign diplomats, as well as a staff member of the SCO Secretariat.

President of the Shanghai Academy of International Studies, Chen Dongxiao, emphasized in his welcoming remarks that as the SCO marking its 25th anniversary is taking on a new mission at the current stage to maintain regional peace, promote joint development, and improve global governance.

Advisor to the SCO Secretariat Siarhei Viarheichyk noted important interrelated tasks facing the Organisation, including improving the efficiency of its activities with a focus on implementing decisions made by the heads of SCO member states, enhancing the governance system - including its permanent bodies - and adapting the SCO's treaty and legal framework to contemporary conditions.

Participants of the discussions put forward a number of ideas and recommendations for the SCO's development, including those that are for further consideration and elaboration by the expert community.

On the margins of the event, the representative of the SCO Secretariat discussed issues of mutual interest concerning multilateral expert and analytical cooperation within the SCO with President of the Shanghai Academy of International Studies Chen Dongxiao and other participants of the forum.
