Mexico advances priority initiatives during 57th Human Rights Council session
  • Mexico led resolutions on the human rights of indigenous peoples, women, and migrants
  • Mexico's proposals were unanimously adopted

Mexico participated as an observer in the 57th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), held from September 9 to October 11 at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The HRC addressed a broad range of issues and adopted 37 resolutions on international human rights. Mexico played a prominent role, promoting resolutions on priority issues for our national development and backing initiatives to strengthen global human rights standards.

Mexico put forward a resolution on the human rights of migrants aimed at countering negative narratives, addressing xenophobia, combating hate speech, and acknowledging migrants' contributions to development.

As part of various core groups of sponsors, Mexico presented additional resolutions. On the human rights of indigenous peoples, Mexico promoted their participation in the Council and highlighted national efforts to strengthen legal frameworks for full recognition of indigenous peoples as rights-holders. Regarding terrorism and human rights, it called on States to uphold human rights in counter-terrorism efforts and to adopt comprehensive preventive measures. Mexico was also part of a core group presenting a resolution to mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the international roadmap for achieving gender equality and women's empowerment, noting both progress and ongoing challenges. All resolutions advanced by Mexico were adopted by consensus.

Mexico also co-sponsored ten resolutions, including: "Human Rights to Potable Water and Sanitation"; "Education as a Tool for the Prevention of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance"; "World Program on Human Rights Education: Action Plan for the Fifth Phase"; "Countering Cyber bullying"; and "Promotion, Protection and Enjoyment of Human Rights on the Internet," as well as two new initiatives on "Elimination of Domestic Violence" and "Social Reintegration of Persons Freed from Detention and Persons Subjected to Noncustodial Measures."

The Mexican delegation took part in various side events on topics such as combating gender stereotypes, addressing gender-based violence, countering xenophobia, children's participation in public affairs, the role of pollution information portals, and the nuclear legacy in the Marshall Islands.

Mexico reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism as the best approach to addressing global challenges and renews its pledge to respect, promote and safeguard human rights.

Mexico views the Human Rights Council as the primary forum for advancing international human rights standards and finding solutions to the shared challenges in this area.

We welcome Mexico's election as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term by the UN General Assembly on October 9. This reflects the international community's recognition of our country's leadership, responsibility, and commitment to defending and promoting human rights.
