BPD Remembers: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remembers the service and sacrifice of Officer Joseph C. Reiser 107 Years ago today. On Sunday, January 20, 1918, Officer Reiser was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a burglary suspect inside an apartment building on Jersey Street in the Fenway.
Officer Reiser was 34 years old at the time of his death and had been employed by the Boston Police Department for ten years.
Officer Reiser was laid to rest at New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan. His name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. on Panel 2, East Line 11. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.
A Hero Sign has been placed in his honor on Jersey Street in District D-4 (South End). The sign is to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life in service to his city.
