REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - In observance of CalFresh Awareness Month, the Human Services Agency Outreach team will provide special Saturday hours on May 16, 23, and 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 1500 Fashion Island Blvd. parking lot in San Mateo to help residents apply for public benefits, get answers to their questions, and prepare for CalFresh changes taking effect June 1, 2026.
Starting June 1, 2026, some CalFresh recipients will be subject to updated work, school, or community service requirements. Most able-bodied adults ages 18 to 64 will need to complete at least 80 hours per month. Exemptions will apply to some residents, including people with qualifying physical or mental health challenges and those caring for a child under age 14 at home.
"These Saturday outreach events make it easier for residents to get help when weekday office hours are not practical," said Rommel Silva, Human Services supervisor. "Our staff can answer questions, help people complete applications, explain upcoming changes, and connect residents with the services that best fit their needs."
During the events, residents can learn about CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, General Assistance, and the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants, and find out whether they may be eligible.
Staff will be available to provide one-on-one support with applications, documents, and next steps. Outreach events often offer shorter wait times than regular office visits, along with personalized assistance and access to the mobile van for services such as printing documents and EBT cards.
Residents can also apply online through BenefitsCal.com or visit any Human Services Agency branch office during regular weekday business hours.
