New Data Released From Household Trends and Outlook Pulse Survey

APRIL 23, 2026 - The U.S. Census Bureau today released new data on employment, food sufficiency, housing status, difficulty of paying usual household expenses, use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other topics from the Household Trends and Outlook Pulse Survey (HTOPS).

These data - collected from a sample of about 30,000 households in June 2025 - cover the nation and smaller geographic areas defined by the Census Bureau.

Data users can access the HTOPS dataset as a public-use file to create customized tables, as well as data tables from the June 2025 HTOPS covering the following topics by selected characteristics:

  • Loss of employment income.
  • Employment status and sector.
  • Teleworking and working from home.
  • Food sufficiency for all households and households with children.
  • Recent food insufficiency for all households and households with children.
  • Health insurance coverage.
  • Owner/renter housing payment status.
  • Risk of losing current housing due to foreclosure or eviction.
  • Living arrangement plan in case of foreclosure or eviction.
  • Household energy use and spending.
  • Available transportation options.
  • Sufficiency of access to transportation.
  • Reasons for unmet transportation needs.
  • Difficulty paying usual household expenses.
  • Changes in prices for goods and services.
  • Stress caused by price increases.
  • Artificial Intelligence use.
  • Opinions of AI based on experience.
  • Opted out of using AI systems.

HTOPS data collected later in 2025 will continue to be released in the coming months.

HTOPS is an experimental data product collected every other month on core and rotating topics to gauge socioeconomic conditions facing U.S. households. It delivers data federal agencies can use to assess conditions, monitor trends, and inform a range of operational and policy needs.
