United States Welcomes Djibouti's Signing of the Artemis Accords
The Department of State congratulates the Republic of Djibouti on joining the Artemis Accords. Djibouti is the 72nd country to sign the Accords to date, pledging its commitment to the peaceful exploration of space.
Djibouti's Ambassador to the United States Mohamed Siad Douale signed the Accords on behalf of the Republic of Djibouti on September 14, 2026. NASA Deputy Administrator Matthew Anderson and State Department Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Frank Garcia witnessed and celebrated the signing at a ceremony at the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Djibouti most recently participated in the Department's U.S.-Africa Technical and Regulatory Space Training Meeting in April 2026, and Djibouti's first two satellites launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
The United States and seven other countries established the Artemis Accords in 2020 to serve as a set of practical principles to guide responsible space exploration. Djibouti joins the United States and 70 other nations in affirming the Accords' principles for sustainable civil space activity. The Department of State and NASA lead the United States' outreach and implementation of the Accords.
