Rep. Jennifer Sanalitro Renews Efforts to Bring No Taxes on Tips & Overtime Pay to Illinois

ILLINOIS - State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) is providing an update on her ongoing efforts to deliver tax relief to Illinois service workers after the General Assembly failed to advance legislation to eliminate state taxes on tips during the 2025 legislative session.

House Bill 1898, filed by Rep. Sanalitro in the Spring of 2025, would amend the Illinois Income Tax Act to create an income tax deduction for gratuities that are included in a taxpayer's federal adjusted gross income. The legislation remains pending as lawmakers return to Springfield for the 2026 session.

"Our tipped workers still deserve a break," said Rep. Sanalitro. "They work long hours, often for modest wages, and the tips they earn should not be subject to additional state taxes. This is a simple, common-sense solution that would let service workers keep more of what they earn."

While the federal government moved forward with efforts to eliminate taxes on tips, Illinois has yet to adopt a similar policy. Sanalitro said the lack of action in Springfield is disappointing and pledged to continue advocating for working families.

"At a time when families are struggling with higher costs for groceries, gas, and housing, the least we can do is stop taxing tips," Sanalitro added. "I will continue fighting to pass HB1898 because our service workers deserve a lawmaker who stands up for them."

Rep. Sanalitro has also filed House Bill 1899 to eliminate state taxes on overtime pay, reinforcing her commitment to easing the tax burden on hardworking Illinoisans.
