What Is The True Hidden Price Of Lam Research Stock

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Shares of Lam Research (LRCX) currently trade at 26.4 times the company's adjusted earnings of the last twelve months, which adds back stock-based pay after tax. That valuation is steep for a chip equipment maker whose sales shrank in each of the two years to September 2024. But a share bought today also buys the profit expected over the next two years. So what are you really paying for each share of Lam Research today?

Lam Research's Price On Two Years Of Expected Profit

Based on the consensus forecast, Lam Research stock trades at 19.2 times its fiscal 2027 earnings, compared with 26.4 times its adjusted earnings of the last twelve months. The stock trades at 15.3 times on the forecast for fiscal 2028. Calculated at the November 5 close, those two multiples represent a hidden price. They show what a share costs based on the profit Lam Research is expected to earn, rather than the profit it has already booked. The fiscal 2028 forecast remains uncertain, with estimates of earnings per share running from $10.82 to $13.22.

What Lam Research Has To Deliver For That Price

For that price to reflect reality, Lam Research must maintain sales growth at the pace of its latest quarter. The consensus forecast projects fiscal 2027 revenue at $35.4 billion, compared with the $23.2 billion reported for fiscal 2026. Revenue in the September quarter, the first of fiscal 2027, reached $8.22 billion. That is up 54.4% from a year earlier, running close to the full-year growth in the forecast.

Management guided December-quarter revenue to $8.6 billion, plus or minus $0.4 billion. Even at the top of that range, sales in the final two quarters of fiscal 2027 would need to average more than the December quarter's to reach the forecast.

Profit in the consensus forecast outpaces sales. Fiscal 2028 net income climbs 25.8% on revenue growth of 20.1%. The forecast puts the net margin at 34.1% in fiscal 2027, compared with the 31.3% reported for fiscal 2026. Lam Research's reported margin in the September quarter was already 33.5%. Management's adjusted guide for the December quarter, $2.33 a share on about 1.253 billion shares and $8.6 billion of revenue, points to a net margin near 34%, in line with the forecast. The forecast margin expands to 35.7% for fiscal 2028. Those wider margins remain an assumption, not a result.

Where Lam Research's Forecast Could Fall Short

Supply limits make sales the first area where the forecast could fall short. Management said on the October 21 call that clean room space and supply chain constraints will keep limiting what chipmakers and equipment makers can deliver into 2027. The company also said its December-quarter guidance would have been a bit higher without those constraints, though it expects to ship the delayed orders in the March quarter.

Net margin is the second area, and a thinner margin would leave profit below the forecast. Management expects its tax rate on adjusted profit to stay around the September quarter's 16.5% for the December quarter and likely beyond. That is up from 11% on the same basis in the June quarter. The company also said gross margin will stay roughly where it is in the near term. With more of each dollar of profit going to tax, the wider net margin in the forecast would have to come from operating costs growing more slowly than sales.

If the forecast materializes, the price on the two forecast years offers a fair picture of what you pay for Lam Research stock. The forecast is most likely to fall short on supply and on net margin. If it does, the stock is a riskier bet, priced for profit Lam Research may not earn. Lam Research is expected to report its December-quarter results in January 2027, and its net margin in that report is the measure to watch.

Paying for profit not yet earned is a bet on the boom. Here's how to be ready for a crash and a rally.
