Leaders and communication professionals from the International Social Security Association's (ISSA) members in the Caribbean gathered in Bridgetown, Barbados, 2-4 June, to discuss communication approaches and strategies in the region. Addressing misinformation appeared as a growing concern.
The technical seminar was organized together with the ISSA Focal Point for the English-speaking Caribbean Countries and hosted by the National Insurance and Social Security Service (NISSS) of Barbados. The event brought together communication professionals and decision-makers from across the region and beyond to share experiences, tools, and strategies for enhancing communication in social security.
Participants explored a range of pressing communication challenges and opportunities, with several core themes emerging:
The seminar underscored the importance of internal staff engagement and the role of human resources. Creative approaches, such as involving staff in social media content, were noted as effective for boosting motivation, participation and promotion.
Participants also emphasized the value of strategic partnerships, including collaborations with government bodies, community organizations and digital influencers, to expand outreach and enhance credibility.
A shared concern was the growing threat of misinformation. Attendees discussed the need for proactive strategies, including audience research, digital monitoring, and rapid response protocols to safeguard public trust. The event followed a similar technical seminar on communication in Latin America that was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina last year. The ISSA will continue to support regional collaboration and innovation in communication, with follow-up actions planned around joint initiatives, content sharing and support for communication professionals in the Caribbean.
