Stony Brook University is accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation, earning financial incentives and industry recognition for recent investments in electric vehicle infrastructure and energy transparency across campus.
During the first half of 2025, the University's Offices of Energy Managementand Sustainability partnered with campus electricians and an external contractor to install new Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations on the Main Campus and at R&D Park. The upgrades qualified Stony Brook for PSEG Long Island's EV Make Ready and Fleet Make Ready Programs, which support the expansion of EV charging infrastructure statewide.
"As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, Stony Brook has expanded public charging for our campus community and installed fleet chargers to support the transition of University vehicles to electric," said Tom Lanzilotta, assistant director of energy management and sustainability at Stony Brook. "This progress reflects a true team effort across Sustainability, Facilities, and our campus partners."
As a result of the installations, Stony Brook received three PSEG rebate checks totaling more than $76,000. The rebates include $36,106 for six public-facing charging stations at Mendelsohn Quad, Lot 2; $20,000 for two public-facing stations at the Innovation & Discovery Center; and $20,000 for a fleet-only charging station at Central Services and Receiving.
The University plans to reinvest the funds into additional EV charging stations identified through its Fleet Electrification Plan, along with other energy management and sustainability initiatives.
"We're grateful to PSEG Long Island for helping offset upfront costs and accelerate our momentum toward a cleaner, more sustainable future," Lanzilotta said.
On January 29, PSEG presented Stony Brook with its Ice Breaker Award, which recognizes organizations that are making measurable progress toward transitioning their vehicle fleets to electric alternatives.
Stony Brook was recognized for launching its fleet electrification efforts through the installation of fleet-only charging infrastructure and for completing a comprehensive Fleet Electrification Plan that outlines a long-term strategy for reducing emissions from University vehicles.
