FIRST® LEGO® League is an international competition that introduces science, technology, engineering and math to children ages 4-16 with hands-on learning challenges. This year the league's theme, "Unearthed," was inspired by archeology.
Teams were asked to design devices that can support endeavors in archeology. Those might include solutions for accessing archeological sites remotely, tools to look underground and ways of persevering archeological finds.
Boise State's Department of Anthropology fielded calls from teams across Idaho. They also spoke with teams from San Diego, California, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Archeologists from the department offered advice and support on team projects.
"Overall, it has been a fascinating outreach experience that allows us to connect with children who are channeling their curiosity regarding any and everything STEM on our discipline," said Mario Zimmermann, an assistant clinical professor of archeology.
