During Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente's visit to New Mexico today, the state government recognized the contribution made by Mexican communities to the state's economic, social and cultural development. The officials also agreed on the importance of continuing to strengthen trade between Mexico and Arizona, a border state.
During a meeting between New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Secretary de la Fuente, the two officials explored areas in which collaboration can be expanded, and highlighted the importance of strengthening the border infrastructure.
During his visit, the Foreign Secretary met with state congressional leaders led by Senate President Mimi Stewart and the Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives, Javier Martinez. Both highlighted the possibilities for strengthening the relationship with Mexico and expressed their intention to strengthen cooperation with their counterparts in the Mexican border states.
At the State Capitol, the congressional leaders agreed on the importance of continuing the economic and social integration of the Mexican community in Arizona.
Both Governor Lujan Grisham and the congressional leaders informed the Foreign Secretary of their interest in strengthening the dialogue and cooperation for the good of both communities.
Foreign Secretary de la Fuente also met with Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber, who said he would continue to support migrant communities by highlighting their significant contributions to the state and the cultural and socioeconomic ties that unite New Mexico and Mexico.
The Foreign Secretary was accompanied by Mexico's consuls in Albuquerque and El Paso, Texas, Patricia Pinzón and Mauricio Ibarra, respectively, and by Roberto Velasco, head of the Foreign Ministry's North America Unit.
