Irwin County SR 90 bridge repair to begin

IRWIN COUNTY - Work is expected to begin this week to repair the State Route 90 Little Brushy Creek bridge in Irwin County that recently sustained vehicular damage.

The Georgia Department of Transportation issued an approximately $75,000 emergency purchase order to get the bridge repaired and reopened as soon as possible. Southern Concrete Construction Co. Inc. is expected to be on site by Tuesday, March 24. Georgia DOT Southwest District Maintenance Manager Cliff Webb said repair shouldn't take more than four or five days.

"We don't like to have any state routes closed for any reason. There's a lot of truck traffic on this route and a lot of farmers use it," he said.

The bridge closed March 18 after a tractor struck the handrail and deck curb/catwalk. The bridge is located about four miles southeast of Ocilla. Traffic is being directed to detour using SR 11 and SR 158.

Webb said motorists driving around the barricades continues to be an issue at the site. Motorists are cautioned that a GDOT bridge inspection team deemed the structure unsafe for the traveling public and barricades are in place for their safety. Heavy equipment will be on site when the contractor begins work, which means motorists who choose to ignore the barricades will have to find a way to backtrack. GDOT asks motorists to please follow the detour route and avoid the area.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia's economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment.
