Nassau University Medical Center Unveils Design for New State of the Art “MammoVan” During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

New Mobile Mammography Center will Increase NUMC's Screening Capacity by 40 Percent, Helping Thousands of Women with Early Detection

(EAST MEADOW, NY) - Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has unveiled the design for its new state-of-the-art mobile breast screening van, the "MammoVan," at an event in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This advanced mobile Mammography unit will provide life-saving early detection services to thousands of women across Nassau County, ensuring accessible healthcare for underserved communities.

"At NUMC, we are committed to providing accessible, high-quality care through our women's health clinics," said Megan C. Ryan, Interim President and CEO of NHCC. "This year alone, we have treated over 13,000 women, and we are on track to exceed 20,000 patients by year-end. This new mobile center will increase our screening capacity by 40 percent. Early detection saves lives, which is why NUMC performs 6,500 mammograms annually-both on-site and through our mobile capacity."

The MammoVan, which is scheduled to begin operating in May 2025, reflects NUMC's ongoing commitment to expanded women's health services.

The MammoVan will replace NUMC's 22-year-old mobile unit and will feature the latest medical imaging technology. Operating five to six days a week, the new van will expand outreach by serving 40% more patients annually, ensuring NUMC continues to lead in women's health services.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman praised Ryan for her leadership and the new mobile center at an unveiling held at NUMC in front of more than 100 staff. "I also want to express my gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff for the incredible work you do in keeping Nassau residents healthy. Early detection is critical-getting mammograms and screenings can make all the difference in health outcomes. This new $1 million van is an incredible investment, and I couldn't be more excited about what it will mean for our community."

The new MammoVan reflects NUMC's dedication to addressing health disparities and expanding healthcare access across the region. With enhanced outreach efforts, NUMC continues to promote early detection and better health outcomes for all women in Nassau County.
