One rarely expects to encounter blind cave fish, dinosaur bones and immersive virtual-reality language experiences all in one place. Yet that range of discovery was exactly what the Discovery in Action Showcase - hosted by the University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences - brought together on March 31.

The showcase transformed Tangeman University Center's Great Hall into a living snapshot of the college itself, with booths, interactive displays and posters from academic units across A&S highlighting the breadth of research, teaching and experiential learning happening every day.

"Discovery in Action reflects what makes Arts and Sciences unique, bringing together different ways of thinking to tackle complex questions and create meaningful impact," said James Mack, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Guests explored posters, booths and hands-on demonstrations representing a wide range of disciplines within Arts and Sciences. Faculty, staff and students discussed research projects, innovative teaching tools and the real-world applications of their work with attendees.

"I wanted to see the excellent research that our students have done," said Sydney Moman, an assistant director of advising within the College of Arts and Sciences.

"As an academic adviser, we are doing the planning, we're hearing what the students' interests are, we're encouraging them to dive into all the great opportunities that our institution has to offer."

The event also fostered connection and inspiration across disciplines.

UC student Avery Cook-Porter was a finalist for the Bearcat Buzz Award.

"I think it's really inspiring to see the work we're all doing to combat some of the world's most pressing issues," Cook-Porter said.

In addition to unit-level displays, undergraduate and graduate students shared their work through the Discovery in Action Student Poster Forum, presenting projects they conducted, contributed to or received funding to complete. From policy proposals aimed at combating food deserts to research expanding access to remote methadone treatment, student posters spanned topics across public health, history, culture and environmental studies.

Tala Hamdan, Samantha Jackson, Selma Younes and Yara Chaouali won the undergraduate Poster Forum honors for their proposed pilot program titled "Breaking the Daily Dosing Barrier: Expanding Access to Remote Methadone Treatment."

UC student filmmaker Ella Marcil won the graduate poster forum award for her presentation titled "Forest Calls 2.0."

The People's Choice Award was awarded to Sharvaree Bhalerao for her research, "How the Irish Became White, and Why It Mattered." Bhalerao also received the undergraduate Bearcats Buzz Award.

Sandra Boateng received the graduate Bearcats Buzz Award for her project "Telling Tales and Fixing Arms: Oral Literature as a Living Archive of Disability in Ghana."
