FIJI–INDIA TIES CELEBRATED AT ICCR ALUMNI MEET
The strong and enduring relationship between Fiji and India was highlighted by the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage, Arts and Public Enterprise, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, during the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Fiji Alumni Meet.
Minister Singh said the Fiji-India partnership is deeply rooted in shared history, heritage, and people-to-people connections, guided by common values of democracy, pluralism, and respect for diversity.
He noted that from the Girmit legacy to modern diplomatic engagement, India has remained a trusted and valued partner of Fiji, with the strength of the relationship reflected in regular high-level engagements between the two countries.
The Minister highlighted the importance of cultural collaboration, citing Fiji's partnership with ICCR in hosting major international events, including the World Hindi Conference in 2023 and the International Ramayan Conference in 2016.
Education was also emphasised as a key pillar of the partnership, with Minister Singh noting that ICCR scholarships have, for decades, enabled Fijians to study in India, gain valuable skills, and return home with global perspectives that contribute to Fiji's national development.
He added that ICCR scholarships form part of broader initiatives by the Government of India to strengthen its friendship with Fiji and support the Indian diaspora.
