Published on January 22, 2025

Aging Partners invites adults age 60 and older for "An Evening with the Cranes" on April 3, at the Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon. The bus departs the Victory Park Senior Center, 600 S. 70th St., at 1:30 p.m. and returns at 10:30 p.m.

Cost for the trip is $115 and reservations can be made by calling 402-441-7158. The reservation and payment deadline is February 18. There must be 40 participants signed up for the trip to occur. A to-go meal will be provided. Participants will be able to view the displays and exhibits while visiting the new building at Rowe Sanctuary.

Each spring, sandhill cranes converge on the Platte River in central Nebraska as they migrate north to their nesting grounds. About 80% of all the cranes on the planet congregate along an 80-mile stretch of the central Platte River in Nebraska to feed on waste grain in the empty cornfields in preparation for the journey to their arctic and subarctic nesting grounds, according to Smithsonian.com.

The viewing blind at Rowe Sanctuary is a dark, enclosed space and participants must be able to travel one-quarter mile on a pebble road to reach the blind. Dark-colored warm clothes, boots or warm shoes, hats, gloves and binoculars are recommended.
