Toss partnered with OpenAI to host a day of hands-on AI learning, bringing together OpenAI experts and Toss employees to explore practical ways of applying AI to everyday work. Held as a special edition of Toss' weekly AI Surf Day program, the event combined expert-led workshops with a company-wide mini hackathon focused on building real business solutions with AI.
Hosted at Toss headquarters in Seoul on May 15, the event drew approximately 400 employees participating both in person and online, earning an average satisfaction score of 4.7 out of 5.
The morning workshops featured separate tracks for technical and non-technical employees. Developers explored how to automate software development workflows using Codex, while non-technical teams learned how to build AI-powered workflows with ChatGPT Workspace agents to streamline repetitive tasks. Both sessions emphasized live demonstrations, interactive Q&A, and hands-on exercises that employees could immediately apply in their own work.
The afternoon mini hackathon challenged participants to build practical AI solutions across two tracks: one focused on developing AI tools themselves, and another on applying AI to existing business workflows. Employees from engineering, business, and operations collaborated in cross-functional teams, spending two and a half hours building AI solutions designed to solve real workplace challenges.
Among the winning projects was an AI-powered menu classification tool for Toss Place that automatically categorizes thousands of merchant menu items each day, enabling richer analysis of industry trends and individual merchant characteristics. Another winning project introduced a developer tool that uses AI agents to automate coding and software validation, streamlining parts of the software development process.
OpenAI praised the quality of the projects produced during the hackathon, highlighting how participants quickly translated AI capabilities into practical business applications. In recognition of their work, OpenAI awarded ChatGPT Pro subscriptions to all participants, in addition to the winning teams.
The collaboration reflects Toss' broader commitment to building an AI-native workplace where employees are encouraged to experiment with AI and apply it directly to their work. The company plans to continue expanding hands-on AI programs and explore additional hackathon-style collaborations with OpenAI.
"Toss is committed to creating an environment where every employee can experiment with AI freely and apply it to meaningful work," a Toss representative said. "We'll continue investing in learning opportunities and collaborative programs that help turn employees' AI innovations into better products and experiences for our users."
