City to reconstruct Pine Street and 28th Street intersection to improve travel safety

As part of the ongoing 28th Street Improvements Project, the City of Boulder will reconstruct the 28^th Street and Pine Street intersection to reduce crashes involving people driving and increase the visibility and safety of people walking, biking, and rolling.

Construction to improve safety, comfort and connectivity will begin Monday, Jan. 26, and is anticipated to be completed in February, pending weather and contractor availability. During construction, Pine Street will be closed to turns to and from 28^th Street, with detours for people walking, biking and driving. A map of construction impacts and detoursis available.

Work includes a raised crosswalk and concrete curb extensions, which will reduce the risk of crashes and severity of crashes if they do occur, reduce crossing distances for people traveling on the crosswalk, and increase their visibility to people driving. Once complete, Pine Street will be right-turn-in and right-turn-out only to address left-turn crash patterns at this intersection. A traffic operations analysis showed that there will not be a significant impact on vehicle operations at nearby streets or intersections following the change.

While the intersection modifications will take about a month to complete, the full 28^th Street Improvements project, which includes bus and turn lanes and 10-foot-wide multi-use paths on both sides of the street, is anticipated to wrap up in mid-2026.

The intersection is also part of the city's Core Arterial Network (CAN), the connected system of multimodal transportation improvements along Boulder's main corridors that will help reduce the potential for severe crashes and make it more comfortable and convenient for people to get where they need to go. This is a text alternative. Bike and pedestrian impacts are as follows: the west multi-use path on 28th Street from Mapleton Avenue down to just north of Spruce Street is closed. To travel around the closure, use the southern crosswalk at Mapleton Avenue and 28th Street, travel on the west multi-use path, and use the pedestrian crossing just north of Spruce Street. Vehicle impacts are as follows: there will be no right or left turns into the closure area on Pine Street. To access the area, use Mapleton Avenue (east/west), 27th Street (north/south), and Spruce Street (east/west).
