CLC Provides Everyday Supports for Busy Adult Learners

Students at the Cambridge Community Learning (CLC) do not just take classes; they are also part of a learning community. This community connects them to many resources to make school and life a little easier.

There are many resources in Cambridge. But, finding them can be difficult, especially if you can't read and write well or if you aren't comfortable with English. Education advisors help CLC students learn about resources and opportunities in the community. Every student at the CLC has an education advisor.

"As an education advisor, I am always looking for ways to help my students to continue studying," says Joseph. "One way I support them is by sharing information. For example, before Thanksgiving, a nearby community organization, the Cambridge Community Center was giving away free turkeys. Or when a student needs help applying for public assistance or filing taxes, I send them to the Cambridge Economic Opportunity Commission (CEOC). I know they are in good hands."

Louise lives in Cambridge with her family. She works during the day and takes English classes at the CLC in the evening. She remembers how Joseph's advice helped make her Thanksgiving holiday special. "Joseph, my education advisor, told us how we could get a free turkey," she says. "Then, our teacher let us leave class a little early so everyone could pick up a turkey. It was really helpful for Thanksgiving!"

In Cambridge, we are lucky to have so many organizations and resources that work together. In December, The Spot Cambridge donated more than 150 jackets to CLC students. "I got a new jacket for my daughter," says Khadija, an English student. "I am not able to work right now, so getting the jacket for free was a big help. I really like Cambridge but sometimes it is confusing because I am not sure where to find things I need."

Many students in our High School Equivalency Credential Program (HSE) struggle to keep studying to pass the 5 exams for their high school diploma. Education advisors help students manage their work, school, and life commitments. "My journey to completing the HiSET honestly wouldn't have worked out without support and resources from the CLC," shares one HSE student.
