Upon returning home and opening the front door, the occupants discovered the residence filled with smoke. Firefighters arrived on scene and quickly conducted a search, which led crews to a walk-in basement where they located a smoldering fire near a workbench and storage racks.

After speaking with one of the occupants, it was reported that earlier in the day a lithium-ion-powered light had been plugged into a wall outlet to recharge. It was later confirmed that this device caused the fire, as no other potential ignition sources were present in the immediate area. Char patterns further supported this conclusion.

Remarkably, as the fire began to propagate, heat buildup near the ceiling caused a plastic water supply line serving an ice maker to rupture. Water spraying from the broken line suppressed the fire and prevented it from spreading. It is likely the home would have sustained substantial damage had this water line not burst and directed water onto the fire. Firefighters overhauled the fire, secured the water line, and cleared the smoke. By 9:00 p.m., the residents were allowed to reoccupy the home.

This incident serves as an important reminder to use lithium-ion battery-powered devices safely. Always charge batteries using the manufacturer-approved charger and avoid leaving devices plugged in unattended or charging overnight. Keep charging devices away from combustible materials and ensure they are placed on a non-flammable surface with adequate ventilation. If a battery shows signs of damage, overheating, swelling, or emits an unusual odor, stop using it immediately and dispose of it properly in accordance with local guidelines.

Following these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of fire in the home.
