SAN LUIS OBISPO - Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) issued the following statement in response to the passing of labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, reflecting on decades of farmworker advocacy and labor rights:
"This world has lost a leader among giants. Dolores Huerta changed our world for the better for millions of people. She was kind, compassionate, strong, and most importantly - honest about what needed to be done and dedicated her life to doing it. She will be forever missed. My heart is with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.""
Born in 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico, Huerta helped transform California's farmworker movement and co-founded the National Farm Workers organization, which later became part of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). Throughout her lifetime, she advocated for better working conditions, protections against harmful pesticides, and access to unemployment and health care benefits for agriculture workers.
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
