Washburn Tech celebrates a new look and location for Academy of Cosmetology

Topeka, Kan. - Washburn Tech's Academy of Cosmetology is now calling North Topeka home. The community is invited to celebrate the relocation at 2240 NW Tyler St. from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 12.

Washburn Tech's Cosmetology program combines classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience through the Academy of Cosmetology, a full-service salon open to the public. For the past decade, the program operated in leased retail space near 29th Street and Kansas Avenue. After purchasing a building in North Topeka, Washburn Tech is consolidating multiple programs into one centralized location.

"Relocating Washburn Tech's Academy of Cosmetology to our new North Topeka location presented a more efficient, cost-effective way to serve students and the community," said Scott Smathers, dean, Washburn Tech. "This facility represents more than a learning space. It is an investment in education, workforce development and community enrichment. We are committed to preparing highly skilled professionals while providing services that support and strengthen our community."

Washburn Tech's Cosmetology program officially opened in the new facility on June 1. Other programs will join it this fall including Electrical Technology and Industrial Machine/Maintenance Technology. Also at the new location - the Washburn Tech Business and Industry Center which delivers continuing education and customized workforce training to local business and industry partners.

A grand opening for the entire Washburn Tech North facility is scheduled for Thursday, August 6.
