Einweihung des renovierten OTIF-Gebäudes in Bern (eng/fr)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is an honour for Switzerland - together with the Canton and the City of Bern - to join you for the inauguration of the renovated headquarters of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail - OTIF.

Mesdames et Messieurs,

Nous ne célébrons pas seulement la rénovation d'un bâtiment, mais aussi un engagement commun - pour la coopération et le multilatéralisme qui unissent l'OTIF et la Suisse depuis plus d'un siècle.

OTIF's roots go back to 1893, when the Central Office for International Carriage by Rail (OCTI) was created. Since then, Bern has been its home - a symbol of continuity and trust.

Switzerland has played a founding role from the start. OCTI was originally under the supervision of the Federal Council. Today, Switzerland remains an active and committed member State.

When this building was inaugurated in 1966, Switzerland offered a gift created for the occasion: a fresco by the Swiss artist Hans Erni. His work - located at the entrance to this room- shows the evolution of rail traction, from manual and animal power to its modernization.
It remains a vivid symbol of innovation, progress, and cooperation - values that continue to define OTIF's mission today.

Over the decades, OTIF has evolved, improved international rail transport, welcomed new members and extended its reach beyond Europe, while maintaining the link to Bern - a sign of friendship and trust that Switzerland deeply values.

Au nom de la Suisse, je remercie l'OTIF pour la confiance accordée depuis tant d'années et sa décision de rénover son quartier-général situé dans notre belle ville fédérale.

La Suisse est heureuse d'avoir soutenu ce projet par un prêt de l'État hôte pour vous offrir un cadre de travail moderne et accueillant.

Je remercie également le Canton et la Ville de Berne pour leur soutien et leur hospitalité. Cet événement d'aujourd'hui nous rappelle que la vocation de la Suisse comme pays hôte ne se limite pas à Genève !

Berne accueille aussi des organisations internationales. Elles sont au nombre de quatre : l'OTIF, l'Union postale universelle (UPU), l'Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM) et le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR).

Cette diversité illustre le caractère unique de Berne, ville dans laquelle les acteurs internationaux sont à la fois proches du gouvernement et de la population. La collaboration internationale s'y vit chaque jour, dans un esprit de proximité et de simplicité - typiquement suisse.

Rail connects people and economies - efficiently and sustainably.

International cooperation is not an option - it is a necessity.

Alors que l'OTIF développe et élargit sa portée mondiale, la Suisse restera un partenaire fiable, attaché à sa mission et à ses valeurs.

Nous sommes touchés que cette salle porte le nom de « Berne », symbole de l'amitié et de la confiance qui nous unissent depuis plus de 130 ans.

May these walls inspire new energy for dialogue, cooperation, and for building together the future of international rail transport.
