Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the City is waiving late fees for outstanding parking tickets during the month of November through its Parking Amnesty Program. Amnesty Month will give drivers with overdue parking tickets the opportunity to clear tickets at the reduced cost of each ticket's original fine and New York State surcharge. Amnesty Month will start on Monday, November 3 and end on Sunday, November 30.
"We're pressing pause on collecting late fees for parking tickets to give our residents the opportunity to reset," said Mayor Walsh. "We understand that parking ticket late fees can be a burden, and we want to help alleviate this burden for our residents as much as we can. I encourage everyone who parks in the City of Syracuse to check for any violations on your vehicles and take advantage of this opportunity."
How Parking Amnesty Works
When a parking ticket is not paid on time - within 21 days of the ticket being issued - it accrues late fees. Late fee amounts depend on the type of parking violation and time elapsed since first notice being issued. During Amnesty Month, all accrued late fees will be waived, allowing drivers to clear outstanding tickets at a fraction of the current amount owed.
During Amnesty Month, vehicle booting will continue, but tickets can be cleared at the reduced cost of the original fine and NYS surcharge in addition to the cost of boot removal. Drivers with multiple outstanding tickets will have the accrued late fees for each ticket waived. They must still pay the original fine and surcharge amount to clear each outstanding ticket.
How to Clear Tickets During Amnesty Month
To clear tickets during Amnesty Month, drivers should:
Starting Monday, November 10, an online self-service portal will be available for drivers to look up their outstanding tickets, view their discounted balances, and pay directly online. The Amnesty Month discount will be available online until Sunday, November 30.
Mail and drop box payments are accepted as check or money order. Cash is also accepted at the drop box. Ticket or license plate number must be written clearly on each check or included with each money order or cash payment.
The City last conducted a parking amnesty program in 2020. Roughly 34,200 tickets were cleared through the program which ran for three weeks and collected nearly $1 million through the payment of reduced fees. This November, tickets dating back to 1997 are eligible to be cleared; there are over 140,000 outstanding tickets in the City's system.
