Bismarck-Mandan Unsheltered Point in Time (PIT) Count

Bismarck-Mandan Area to Conduct 2025 Unsheltered Point in Time (PIT) Count

Bismarck, ND - [January 17, 2025] - Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health, in partnership with local service providers, community organizations, and volunteers, will conduct the annual Unsheltered Point in Time (PIT) Count the night of Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

The PIT Count, mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is conducted nationwide to capture data on both sheltered and unsheltered homelessness. The data collected during the PIT Count is vital for securing federal funding and informing local strategies to address homelessness.

The PIT Count is an organized community effort to identify and count individuals who are experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Volunteers and outreach teams will visit locations where people experiencing homelessness may stay, including streets, parks, vehicles, and other areas not meant for human habitation.

"The Point in Time Count helps us better understand the scope of homelessness in our community and the unique challenges faced by individuals and families without shelter," said Renae Moch, Public Health Director for Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health. "This data is critical for informing policy decisions, tailoring local services, and demonstrating the need for resources to address homelessness."

Mark Heinert, President of the Missouri Valley Coalition for Homeless People, added, "Homelessness is a complex issue that requires collaboration and commitment from the entire community. The PIT Count provides the data we need to advocate for effective solutions and ensure everyone has access to safe and stable housing. We believe that everyone deserves to have a place to call home."

Volunteers play an essential role in the success of the PIT Count. Community members interested in participating will work as part of an outreach team to collect data and distribute essential items such as blankets, clothing, and hygiene kits. The data collected during the 2025 PIT Count will be analyzed and shared with the community later in the year.
