Near- Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

On Friday, November 15, 2024, at approximately 7:10 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Honoapiilani Highway (30), .4 miles south of Kekaa Drive in Kaanapali.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a white 2024 Chevrolet Suburban was making an illegal left turn onto Honoapiilani Highway from the parking area of 2580 Keakaa Drive; at the same time, an orange 2017 KTM motorcycle was traveling south within the inner lane of Honoapiilani Highway and collided into the Suburban as it was making the left turn.

As a result of this collision, the operator of the motorcycle, a 35-year-old Lahaina male, sustained critical life-threatening injuries. The male was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in critical condition, where he remains. The operator of the Suburban, a 37-year-old female, and her 41-year-old male passenger, both of Washington State, were not injured.

The operator of the Suburban was transported to the Wailuku Police Station and was subsequently placed under arrest for the offense of Negligent Injury in the First Degree and released pending investigation.

Investigation reveals that at the time of the collision:

The motorcycle operator was wearing a helmet.

The operator and passenger of the Suburban were wearing their seatbelt.

The vehicle's airbags did not deploy.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol is pending as the investigation is still ongoing.
