The Attorney General's Office today announced that Peter Newton, 53, of Middlebury, Vermont, was sentenced in Vermont Superior Court, Chittenden Criminal Division, after pleading guilty to a felony charge of Lewd and Lascivious conduct and a misdemeanor charge of Simple Assault.
The Court, Judge John Pacht presiding, sentenced the defendant to a deferred sentence with two years of probation on the felony Lewd and Lascivious count. On the misdemeanor Simple Assault count, the Court sentenced the defendant to six to twelve months of jail time all suspended with two years of probation and a permanent conviction. Conditions of Mr. Newton's probation include that he is not to work as a law enforcement officer, that he is not to have any contact with the victim, and that he must complete individual sex offender treatment, a separate domestic violence counseling program, and substance abuse and alcohol counseling.
If Mr. Newton violates the conditions of his probation, he faces up to five years in prison on the felony conviction and one year in prison on the misdemeanor.
