Shares of IonQ (IONQ) lost 35.6% over the month ending November 2, 2026, while the S&P 500 slipped 2.3%. The broader market fell far less during that decline. IonQ has also experienced five market-wide shocks since its listing. When the whole market falls, does IonQ fall harder, and how long does it stay down?
In Market Shocks, IonQ Fell Nearly Triple The Market
During those five shocks, IonQ shares dropped an average of 37.5%, compared with a 13.4% decline for the S&P 500 over the same dates. The largest of those falls occurred during the 2022 inflation shock as the Fed tightened: IonQ lost 75.0%, and the index fell 24.0%. In the most recent event, the 2025 US tariff shock, the stock lost 46.0%, against a 19.0% decline for the S&P 500. IonQ closed November 2 at $28.17, already 60.9% below its 12-month high, and a fall the size of the 37.5% shock average would take it to about $17.61.
Following all five shocks, IonQ returned to its pre-decline closing high. The median recovery took 2.2 months from the low. Two of those waits stretched past a year, with the longest lasting 14.6 months after the 2022 decline.
IonQ's Sales And Losses Have Both Grown
IonQ posted revenue of $246 million in the twelve months ending June 30, 2026, up 370.6% from the prior year. The company's operating loss also widened, rising to $1,006 million from $367 million. IonQ is also retaining less from each sale: its gross margin fell to 29.3% from 53.8% a year earlier.
The company funds these losses from the cash it holds rather than profits. IonQ held $2,119 million in cash and short-term investments as of June 30, 2026, against $54.5 million in debt.
IonQ Is Adding Both Shares And Businesses
IonQ's average diluted share count was 368 million in the twelve months ending June 2026, up from 251 million a year earlier, and more shares are on the way. On October 12, 2026, IonQ agreed to acquire the cybersecurity company Elisity in an all-stock deal for up to $1.3 billion. Two days later, the company priced a $2.0 billion equity offering, meaning each existing share will represent a smaller piece of the business.
Following the late-July closure of its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater, IonQ issued its updated combined 2026 revenue guidance on September 8, 2026. The company now expects total revenue for the integrated entity to reach between $450 million and $460 million, which accounts for the removal of any intercompany bookings.
IonQ is expected to report next on November 5, 2026, and revenue for the combined company is the measure to watch.
