Mayor Whitmire secures new car for UH student.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 9, 2026
As he promised, Houston Mayor John Whitmire helped secure a new car for University of Houston student Abigail Trujillo. After they visited Friday afternoon in the Mayor's office at City Hall, they stepped outside so the Mayor could hand Trujillo the keys to her new Honda Civic.
"I am pleased that not only have we made Abigail whole, but I think we have certainly improved her circumstances," Whitmire said. "And we've all learned a lot from this." In a call with Trujillo late last month, Mayor Whitmire vowed to replace her vehicle after it sustained damage by gunfire during a Houston Police officer-involved shooting in July.
"I'm super grateful, and I'm glad I got out of this situation," Trujillo said.
Trujillo's damaged car was paid off with the help of the Houston Police Officers' Union and the Mayor. Anonymous donors and Mayor Whitmire helped Trujillo secure a new car. No taxpayer funds were used. Trujillo also met HPOU president Doug Griffith.
"The Houston Police Officers' Union played a real vital role in helping us take care of the damaged vehicle," Whitmire said. "There was a note on it, so there no longer is any financial responsibility by Abigail and her family for the shot-up car. There were also some private individuals who played a role in getting her in a new vehicle.
Whitmire, a father of two daughters, put himself through the University of Houston. He empathized with Trujillo, a 20-year-old Houstonian who works full-time while also attending UH full-time.
"Abigail is a very bright student and an example of the future of Houston, which means we are in good hands," Whitmire said.
Shortly after learning of the case, Whitmire spoke with Trujillo via phone multiple times and promised her that something good would come from the situation. On Friday, he delivered.
"It's been really a collaboration of Houstonians coming together," Whitmire said. "Some individuals contacted Abigail directly. We also reached out to some individuals we knew who would be Good Samaritans."

Trujillo received a Honda Civic to replace he vehicle that was damaged in a Houston Police officer-involved shooting in July.
"Algunas personas contactaron directamente a Abigail.
