Mayor Mike Johnston today shared and celebrated the announcement that Denver is one of five cities in contention to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention.

"I'm thrilled the Democratic National Committee is considering Denver as the host city for the 2028 convention," said Mayor Johnston. "Denver not only offers everything a successful convention needs, but we are a shining example of how to lead America forward by dreaming big and delivering bigger. We're bringing down crime, reducing street homelessness and reinvesting in our neighborhoods. I'm grateful to all of the many partners who are supporting Denver's bid to bring the DNC back to Denver on the 20th anniversary of the Obama convention."

"Denver and all of Colorado is convenient to get to and is a must-visit destination for people around the country and around the world, and it makes perfect sense that Denver would be considered a finalist to host the Democratic National Convention," said Gov. Jared Polis. "Denver has already proven that we can host an incredible Democratic National Convention, having hosted one of the most memorable in recent history, and I have no doubt that when the committee visits they will see the same opportunity for 2028."

"Colorado is ready to lead, and our country is ready for a new direction," said Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib. "Our mission to protect everyone's family, freedoms and future has united people across our state-and that unity has built the infrastructure, energy and capacity to host at the highest level and share that mission with the nation. We're honored to be considered and excited to show what Colorado can deliver for our party and our country."

Denver is uniquely positioned as an ideal city to host the Democratic National Convention owing to multiple factors, including the ease with which travelers can fly to Denver International Airport - one of the most connected airports in the world - before taking the A-line directly into downtown where they will find thousands of hotel rooms and hundreds of restaurants and bars within walking distance, many of them added since 2008.

Denver also has extensive experience holding large events, including NCCA tournaments, conventions, championship parades, high-profile concerts, and of course, the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

"I saw firsthand the incredible impact the Democratic National Convention had on my family's business when it came to Denver in 2008," said Denver City Council President Amanda P. Sandoval. "I also saw the way it lifted Denver up and the incredible positivity we felt as we nominated the leader who would take our country in a bold new direction. Like many Americans, I'm excited for the possibility of that feeling to return and hope it can start right here in Denver."

The 2008 Democratic National Convention led to an estimated $154 million economic impact in Denver and generated a $266 million economic benefit for Metro Denver. The city anticipates a greater economic impact in 2028 if awarded the convention. For reference, the 2024 DNC generated an estimated $371 million in economic impact in Chicago.

"Our city offers everything necessary to deliver an exceptional convention - world-class venues, experienced organizers, proven infrastructure, and most importantly, a skilled, experienced, and vibrant workforce," said Denver Area Labor Federation President Jon Alvino. "In 2008, we successfully hosted a historic convention that showcased the very best of our city and our labor community. Today, we stand ready to recreate that magic once again and help bring that same energy, professionalism, and pride back to Denver in 2028."

"The Democratic National Convention is in a class of its own when it comes to driving economic activity," said Downtown Denver Partnership CEO Kourtny Garrett. "And even though Denver will face fierce competition, we know Denver is also in a class of own when it comes to what we can offer. If the DNC selects Denver, it will find a city ready to deliver the most accessible, connected convention in the party's history. It will also find a city that knows how to have fun, and whose hotels, bars, restaurants, and access to amazing hiking and outdoor recreation is second to none."

"We are eager to showcase the remarkable transformation of our city since 2008," said Visit Denver President & CEO Richard W. Scharf. "Combined with 300 days of sunshine, vibrant and welcoming neighborhoods, new cultural institutions, and an exceptional culinary scene featuring James Beard and Michelin-recognized restaurants, Denver is uniquely positioned to deliver an outstanding and successful 2028 Democratic National Convention."
