Step Up , the City of Minneapolis' summer internship program, is now accepting applications for 2025. Each year, hundreds of historically underserved Minneapolis youth gain meaningful, paid work experience through Step Up, enhancing their career readiness.
"Step Up interns are inspiring. They bring fresh perspectives and incredible talent to businesses across Minneapolis," said Mayor Jacob Frey. "This program creates opportunities while teaching these young leaders the skills they'll need to flourish in any endeavor they pursue. With the experience and connections gained through Step Up, our graduates make lasting impacts wherever they go."
Young people, ages 14- to 21-years-old, are matched with internships at private, nonprofit and public agencies across the metro, ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 companies. Participants explore their passions, develop practical skills and connect with industry professionals, while gaining experience and earning money.
"Real world work experience is critical for building a strong and resilient workforce," says Step Up Director Tammy Dickinson. "By investing in the work skills of our youth, we are strengthening the entire community."
Step Up is a program through the City of Minneapolis Employment and Training (MET). MET partners with Achieve Twin Cities , Minnesota CareerForce , and Project for Pride in Living to provide the program. Since the program began in 2003, Step Up has facilitated over 34,000 internships. The number of available internships depends on the employers who participate each year. Recent employers include Target, US Bank, Pillsbury United, and Cookie Cart.
"(Step Up) helps you find the jobs that are more personalized to your preferences," said Nick, a former intern with Tree Trust. "You get to tell people what you like, what you want to do."
"My favorite part (was) working with the other interns. Teamwork gets everything done faster, and you can make connections with new people," said Warren, who worked with Minnesota Trades Academy.
All applicants who meet eligibility criteria are required to participate in online work readiness training to qualify for an internship. The City matches qualified participants with internships based on their interests and skills. Qualified youth who aren't placed in internships may participate in online career exploration programming.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 14. Applicants will be notified by Feb. 17 if they have been accepted into the program. Interest forms for employers are available now through March 31. To learn more, visit the StepUpMpls.org or email [email protected] .
