Open Consultation on the first draft of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for the space sector

This is an opportunity to co-shape the European framework for measuring impacts and the environmental footprint of space activities. Space companies and interested stakeholders are invited to review and provide feedback on the first draft document of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for the space sector (PEFCR4Space). This document was prepared by the established Technical Secretariat, a multi-stakeholder group representing industry representatives, NGOs, scientific experts, and government institutions.

The closing date of this consultation is on 1 December 2025.

What is the PEFCR4space?

Under the PEFCR4space initiative, the European Commission is developing a standardised method for assessing and reducing environmental impacts, tailored to the sector-specific needs of space. A comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) is followed to ensure reliable, comparable, and verifiable environmental results. The PEFCR4space helps to combat greenwashing, reduces complexity and costs, and enables fair, performance-based environmental impact assessments.

How to participate? Your Feedback Matters!

Your insights are essential to ensure that PEFCR4Space becomes a solid and practical tool for measuring the environmental impacts of space activities. The consultation documents can be downloaded here: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/Pefcr4spaceOpenConsultation2025
