When extreme cold, sleet, and snow hit Raleigh this past weekend, Raleigh Transportation was ready to respond.
On Sunday, January 25, Wake County Emergency Management reached out for help transporting residents after frozen pipes forced the closure of First Baptist Church, a women's white flag shelter operated by St. John's/Bryant Center. Within hours, Raleigh Transportation stepped in to help ensure no one was left without a warm place to go.
Assistant Transportation Directors Het Patel (Transit) and Steve Halsey (Street Maintenance and Right of Way Services) quickly coordinated resources, securing three GoRaleigh buses to transport 75 women to the Southeast Raleigh High School white flag shelter. GoRaleigh operators stepped up to make multiple trips, while the Street Maintenance team led the way with a salt truck along the route to help ensure safe travel in icy conditions.
Thanks to careful coordination and teamwork, every passenger arrived safely and without issue. Once the mission was complete, buses were returned to the facility and operators made it home safely as well.
While much of this work happened quietly behind the scenes, it reflects the dedication of Raleigh Transportation and GoRaleigh staff-those you see every day and those working out of sight-who are always ready to serve when the community needs them most.
No matter the weather or the challenge, Raleigh Transportation remains committed to showing up for Raleigh, keeping people safe, and supporting our community when it matters most.
