Tempe to display memorial signage for those killed in traffic accidents the weekend of Nov. 14 - 17

To remember and honor the 19 lives lost on Tempe streets in 2024, the city will place displays at the intersections closest to where traffic fatalities occurred, beginning Friday, Nov. 14, through Monday, Nov. 17.

The displays will commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) on Sunday, Nov. 16. WDR is a global event to remember the many millions who have been killed and seriously injured in traffic crashes and to acknowledge the suffering of all affected victims, families and communities. This is the sixth year Tempe has placed displays in honor of WDR.

In 2024 Tempe had 17 collisions that resulted in fatalities, with 19 community members losing their lives. The memorial displays for the 19 victims can be found at:

In 2018, Tempe became the first city in Arizona to adopt a Vision Zero goal, implementing a plan to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious-injury crashes in 2019. Since then, Tempe has implemented several programs aimed at making streets safer, like traffic calming, reduced speed limits and photo enforcement at several high-risk intersections. Tempe saw a decrease in 2024 in both fatalities and serious physical injuries when compared to 2023. When compared to the year prior, Tempe has seen a reduction in total collisions for eight quarters in a row.

"While we're happy to see these improvements here in Tempe, any fatality is one too many," said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. "We will continue to monitor this data and make smart improvements to road safety throughout our community, because everyone deserves to get home safely."
