Latino-Owned Coffee Shop, Casita Coffee, is Brewing Dreams One Cup at a Time in Gilbert

Gilbert, Ariz.- Latino owners Ana and Saul Herrera have brewed something special in Gilbert, winning the community's heart one cup of coffee and one conversation at a time. From pouring lattes on four wheels to crafting their signature Café de Olla drink in a cozy brick-and-mortar shop, Casita Coffee is more than a family business; it's a love letter to the Latino community.

Casita hit the road four years ago when the Arizona State University alums decided to pursue a new hobby. Now married for a decade, the couple juggled full-time careers while raising their sons, who were both under two years old at the time. Despite the challenges, Ana, who holds a master's degree in social work, and Saul, who has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, were committed to their dream and building their brand in the evenings and on weekends after their main jobs.

Ana and Saul started serving specialty coffee drinks with a Latin-inspired touch at the Gilbert Farmers Market in the Heritage District and occasionally set up their coffee truck near public schools. At first, the couple worried they wouldn't succeed due to tough competition in the area, but even with some slow days, their consistency and community-first approach helped them build a loyal customer base. Ten months ago, they took a chance and opened their first shop located at 7 E Palo Verde St., providing a home-like atmosphere where people can connect over coffee.

"We noticed a lack of Latino coffee shops in the East Valley and in Gilbert and we wanted to offer the community something different that they haven't seen here before," said Ana. "Our drinks are always inspired by trends and seasons with that Latin flavor added to it," she said.

They credit Gilbert's small-town charm and supportive community for their success. "We could've stayed in Tempe where we went to school and done a lot there, but we wanted to grow roots where we live now, where we're raising our kids, and where there is a lack of Latino representation," said Ana.

Currently serving its fall menu, including their famous Pumpkin Spice Latte, Pumpkin Spice Horchata Latte, and Salted Maple, Casita is already crafting its winter seasonal drinks.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, the Town of Gilbert celebrates Ana and Saul's inspiring journey as entrepreneurs and representatives of Latino culture, which brings flavor and inspiration to our community.
