SACRAMENTO- Today, Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) joined the Center for Science in The Public Interest to unveil Assembly Bill 2034: The Food Additive Safety and Transparency Act, aimed at strengthening oversight of food additives and increasing transparency for consumers.
"We know that healthy nutrition leads to healthy outcomes," said Addis. "As a mom and teacher, I have seen how poor nutrition can impact our most precious asset - our children. I am proud to join the growing bipartisan-partisan movement of legislators across the nation to ensure food safety. That is why I introduced AB 2034, the Food Additive Safety and Transparency Act, to increase transparency and State oversight the hidden substances. Californian's want and deserves to know what's in their food."
Today's event featured the New York Bodegas Association and New York Assemblymember Anna Kelles (D-Ithaca), author of the Food Safety and Chemical Disclosure Act (A1156E).
AB 2034 builds on California's food safety protections and adds to the growing number of states whose legislatures have introduced over 100 bills that ban dangerous food additives, including those covered under the Generally Recognized as Safe ("GRAS") system. In addition to California and New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are reviewing reforms to the GRAS program while countless other states are requiring warning labels and banning certain additives.
AB 2034 has been referred to the Assembly Health Committee and the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee for review.
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
