The EU's strong support to the UN, the multilateral system and international law in turbulent times was at the heart of the discussions at our EU Heads of Missions meeting in Villa Europa this week.
The EU is a reliable and predictable partner of the UN's Rome-based agencies FAO, WFP & IFAD. Our strong commitment to this multilateral normative and development organisation and to the fight against hunger in the world is underlined by the EU's constant engagement, with concrete proposals, in the ongoing FAO review and UN80 process and by the nominations of 3 experienced and high-level candidates for the position of FAO Director-General, to be elected by FAO's 193 voting Members in July 2027: Phil Hogan (Ireland), Maurizio Martina (Italy) and Luis Planas (Spain). We are working on identifying a single EU candidate in the coming months.
At the same time, we are supporting candidates for the leadership of WFP & IFAD who can lead these important organisations in challenging times on the basis of the sustainable development principles. The EU should not be taken for granted in this quest. Global food security matters more than ever before and is of strategic interest to the EU.
