Everytown Spent $10 Million to Elect Moms Demand Action Volunteers, Flip State Legislative Chambers, and Build Trifectas in Key Battleground States
WASHINGTON - Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, declared a major victory today as voters flipped the Wisconsin State Assembly to a gun safety majority, establishing a gun safety trifecta.
"With fair maps finally in place, Wisconsin voters elected a gun safety majority to the Assembly," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. "Everytown is eager to partner with the new majority to pass the common-sense gun safety laws that Wisconsinites deserve."
"For years, Moms Demand Action volunteers serving in the Wisconsin Assembly have pushed for gun safety from the minority, and now they'll do it as part of a majority," said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. "That's what this movement has been organizing toward, and we're ready to help them turn gun safety legislation into gun safety law."
"Wisconsin volunteers have testified, rallied, and lobbied for gun safety in Madison for years, but a gun lobby-backed Assembly majority wouldn't lift a finger," said Briana Allen, a volunteer with the Wisconsin chapter of Moms Demand Action. "This fall we took that fight to the ballot box, knocking doors across the state, and we won. Now Wisconsin has a majority that will put public safety first."
Everytown's top state-level goal this cycle was building trifectas: establishing gun safety majorities in both legislative chambers alongside a gun safety champion in the governor's office. Across Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, and Everytown for Gun Safety VF MN invested $10 million, running paid media campaigns supporting Moms Demand Action volunteers in key state legislative battleground districts and partnering with the Democratic Governors Association to elect gun safety governors in those states. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made more than 15 million voter contacts in support of gun sense candidates up and down the ballot.
These candidates were among 547 Moms Demand Action volunteers who ran for offices up and down the ballot across 47 states this cycle, including 40 in all who ran for Congress. Many were trained through Demand a Seat, which Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund launched in 2021 to train grassroots volunteers and gun violence survivors to run for office. The program has trained more than 1,600 volunteers across 49 states and Washington, D.C. Since 2021, more than 600 former volunteers have been elected, including six who were already serving in Congress before this election.
