IBCA Releases List Of Winningest IHSA Basketball Programs & Coaches Entering 2025-26 Season

Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) historian Steve Allen annually compiles the list of the winningest high school boys and girls basketball programs and coaches in state history. Allen has released his updated rankings ahead of the start of the 2025-26 season, which you can find below.

The IHSA girls basketball season can get underway on November 17, while boys games may begin on November 24.

Centralia High School not only tops the boys basketball list in Illinois, but the Orphans have also won more games than any other boys basketball program in the country. Centralia and Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee have annually battled for the top spot in the nation, with CHS taking a slight lead of 2,410 to 2,405 entering the upcoming season.

John Marshall Metropolitan High School in Chicago leads the girls list with 1,211 wins, but Teutopolis is closing fast at 1,203. The Wooden Shoes could potentially surpass the Commandos during the 2025-26 campaign. Legendary coach Dorothy Gaters built Marshall in a state and national power during her 45 seasons leading the program. From 1975 to 2021, she won 1,153 games and 10 IHSA state titles.

All but 61 of Teutopolis' wins have come under the direction of Dennis Koester or Laurie Thompson. Thompson won a state title playing under Koester, coached alongside him for many years, and then took over the program following his passing in 2006.
