BCLA Summer Internship Spotlight: Meghan Hidayat ‘29

This summer, Meghan Hidayat is taking part in conversations shaping Los Angeles through a communications and policy internship with the Central City Association. As a rising sophomore majoring in international relations, Hidayat was eager to gain hands-on experience early in her academic journey. Drawn to the intersection of public policy and the private sector, she wanted to understand better how collaboration among businesses, policymakers, and community stakeholders shapes economic development and public outcomes.

"I wanted to see how organizations work together to address challenges and create opportunities for growth," she said. "This internship stood out because it offered the chance to explore those connections while developing practical professional skills and expanding my understanding of the field."

No two days look the same for Hidayat. Her mornings typically begin with a staff meeting to review projects and priorities before she jumps into assignments supporting teams across the organization. Throughout the day, she shadows professionals in areas ranging from social media and stakeholder relations to public affairs, gaining broad exposure to the organization's work. Her responsibilities have included creating social media content and researching issues affecting Downtown Los Angeles. She has also had the opportunity to visit Los Angeles City Hall to observe City Council meetings and participate in discussions about preparations for the FIFA World Cup, including how local businesses can engage with and benefit from the global event.

"I think one of the biggest lessons I've learned is how many different voices are involved in decision-making," said Hidayat. "Government, businesses, and community organizations all have their own priorities, and balancing everyone's perspectives can be challenging. It's shown me the importance of communication, collaboration, and finding common ground."

Reflecting on her first internship, Hidayat says the experience has brought her coursework to life by providing firsthand exposure to the intersection of business and public policy. It has also strengthened her interest in pursuing a career that bridges the public and private sectors to positively impact people and communities. Hidayat's internship is part of BCLA's inaugural Summer Internship Program, which has placed 70 students in paid roles with news organizations, nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and offices across LMU. As a StudyLA Civic Fellow, she is among a cohort of students gaining professional experience with organizations and public offices throughout Los Angeles. Hidayat said the stipend provided through the program was especially meaningful, helping offset educational expenses and enabling a full commitment to the internship. "I'm grateful that the stipend made this opportunity more accessible," she said.
