SEMO Game Development Club Hosts Game Jam

Students with a passion for gaming, creativity and technology will have the opportunity to bring their ideas to life at Southeast Missouri State University's first-ever Game Jam, hosted by the Department of Computer Science and the Game Development club April 24-26.

A Game Jam is a fast-paced, hands-on experience, for aspiring developers from across the region to collaborate and create original video games in a competitive, time-based environment. The event will take place in Dempster Hall rooms 108 and 109, beginning Friday evening and concluding Sunday afternoon with a final showcase and awards ceremony.

"The Game Jam directly aligns with the skills and learning objectives taught in SEMO's Game Development program," said Ethan Chou, computer science and game development instructor at SEMO. "This gives students a chance to apply what they have learned in the classroom, and for outside attendees to experience what our program is all about. By designing and building an actual game, and working under this tight timeline, students gain real experience with game development."

The Game Jam will kick off Friday at 5 p.m. with an opening ceremony where participants will receive a randomized theme. Teams will then have the weekend to design and develop a fully playable game inspired by that theme. Throughout the event, participants will apply skills in programming, design, storytelling and problem-solving while working under real-world development constraints.

Participants can expect a collaborative and creative atmosphere as they brainstorm ideas, build prototypes and refine their games before presenting them to judges. Submissions will be evaluated on creativity, execution and overall design, and winners will receive prizes provided by event sponsors, along with a trophy and recognition as champions of SEMO's inaugural Game Jam.

"Events like this are so important for people interested in game development to gain experience. They provide an opportunity to connect with other students who share similar interests," said Kel Knight, Game Development Club president. "I hope participants leave with valuable experiences, new connections and a supportive game development network."

In addition to competition, the Game Jam provides valuable opportunities for networking, skill development and portfolio building. Students gain hands-on experience that mirrors industry practices while connecting with peers who share an interest in game development.

Games created during the event will be available for public play on Itch.io following the competition, allowing participants to showcase their work beyond the weekend.

The Game Jam is supported by sponsors including Papa John's, Off Meta Gaming, SpellBreaker Games, STG Cards and Collectibles, Castle Perilous and Insomnia Cookies.

The event is free to attend, though participants must register in advance and have an Itch.io account to submit their games. There is no limit on the number of participants, and individuals or teams, including high school students and university groups, are encouraged to join.

By combining creativity, collaboration and technical skill, the Game Jam highlights SEMO's commitment to preparing students for careers in the growing game development industry.
