This week, ASPPH has released the ASPPH Artificial Intelligence Framework: Harnessing Innovation for Academic Public Health, a resource designed to help schools and programs of public health lead the responsible integration of artificial intelligence across education, research, practice, and policy. The framework was officially launched at the 2026 ASPPH Sections Retreat, where members from across the academic public health community will have the opportunity to engage with its recommendations and discuss the future of AI in the field.
The framework is the culmination of the work of the ASPPH Task Force for the Responsible and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research, Practice, and Education. Developed through extensive collaboration with educators, researchers, practitioners, students, and institutional leaders, the report provides a roadmap for harnessing AI's potential while ensuring that ethics, equity, transparency, accountability, and public trust remain at the center of innovation. Recognizing that artificial intelligence is reshaping how knowledge is created, data are analyzed, and decisions are made, the framework outlines strategic recommendations across four key pillars: Education; Teaching & Learning; Practice & Research; and Policy, Regulatory, and Architectural Frameworks. Recommendations include strengthening AI literacy, expanding faculty development, advancing responsible research practices, and supporting the development of "bridge professionals" who can connect technical expertise with organizational leadership and community perspectives.
By offering a coordinated roadmap for action, the framework positions academic public health to lead the responsible development, governance, and application of AI technologies while advancing the field's commitment to improving population health and promoting equity.
ASPPH extends its appreciation to the task force members and contributors whose expertise and leadership made this important resource possible.
