Hirono Votes Against Trump’s Illegal War with Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Today, U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement after voting to advance Senator Tim Kaine's (D-VA) War Powers Resolution, which would block President Trump from using further military force against Iran.

"Just days after Trump dragged our country into a reckless war with Iran, chaos has spread throughout the region and the lives of six American servicemembers have been tragically lost, with no end in sight to this escalation. We have the strongest military in the world, but the capacity of U.S. forces is not infinite. As Trump continues to divert resources, attention, and assets away from other priorities to fuel his war in Iran, this regime has yet to articulate any plan or strategy for what comes next. By refusing to assert Congress's power as the only branch of government that can declare war, Senate Republicans are betraying the American people and empowering Trump's lawlessness, regardless of the consequences for our country."
