Solano County - State Route 29, also known as Sonoma Boulevard, is in many ways, "the heart of Vallejo." The route serves as a vital connection between communities on the north and south route for residents, tourists, delivery trucks, emergency responders, transit providers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Caltrans Bay Area (District 4) today hosted a ground-breaking ceremony to celebrate the start of the SR-29/Sonoma Boulevard Pavement Rehabilitation and Complete Streets Elements Project in Vallejo.

"In partnership with the Solano Transportation Authority and City of Vallejo, Caltrans is excited to break ground on this paving and Complete Streets project along Sonoma Boulevard, State Route 29, a historic and vital route through the heart of Vallejo and for all of Solano County," said Acting District 4 Director David Ambuehl. "This project will enhance the driving experience for residents and visitors, improve safety and connectivity for pedestrian and bicyclists and provide an inviting environment for businesses along the route."

Caltrans is scheduled to pave Sonoma Boulevard in both directions from Cal Poly Maritime Academy to North of Mini Drive at the Solano County/Napa County line. The project includes Complete Streets elements.

City of Vallejo's contribution will add new trees, benches, and bike racks in the downtown area.

This project is needed to address the pavement conditions on SR-29 and at the same time add several enhanced safety features, including new bike lanes, ADA curb ramps, curb bulb outs, newly painted crosswalks and added street lighting on the busy route.

Some of the project benefits are as follows:

  • New black top with fresh striping from Maritime Academy Drive to Solano County (Mini Drive, Vallejo) line.
  • Lane Diet from Magazine Street to Curtola Parkway, connecting to downtown existing reduced lane geometry. The lane diet will create new parking spots for residence on the Sonoma Boulevard who are currently forced to park on sidewalks.
  • Curb bulb outs at certain locations in downtown for safer pedestrian crossings and enhanced crosswalk markings.
  • New left turn lanes at intersections and median two-way left-turn lanes for safer and efficient turning movements.
  • About 57 pedestrian scale lights in downtown area for a vibrant, safer, and well-lit downtown.
  • Some new trees, benches and bike racks in downtown for the residents.
  • Protected bike lanes in sections where businesses have ample of off-street parking spaces and new bike lane markings with green pavement markings for section where on-street parking is needed and provided.
  • New traffic signals at various locations with ADA-compatible push buttons for crossing.
  • Coordinated traffic signal for smoother traffic flow.
  • Raised median island with ground cover from Valley Vista Avenue to Mini Drive to increase pedestrian and vehicle safety.
